Established in 1868, Memorial Day was a day for remembrance of the soldiers who died during the Civil War. In previous years, Memorial Day occurred on May 30th of each year. In 1971, Congress enacted the “National Holiday Act”, whereby Memorial Day occurs on the last Monday of May.
Memorial Day is a time of picnics, sporting events, and vacationing. However, the true meaning of Memorial Day lies in the remembrance and honor of those who fought and continue to fight for our country’s freedom. At 3 pm on Memorial Day, there is a “National Moment of Remembrance”. At that time, everyone should pause and remember those who have lost their lives to defend their country.
